European Nickel Directive – EN 1811 requires a two stage test that simulates – two years wear, and sweat test with nickel migration limited to .5 micrograms/cm2/week for skin contact. A flash layer of nickel is used in the plating process for our Silver, Gold and copper plated finishes. Under normal conditions the nickel is not detectable on the surface of the components and historically these finishes have passed the “wear test”. However, variations in plating result in some plate runs failing the set limits for release in contact with the skin. Therefore, TierraCast is not in full compliance with the EU Nickel Directive for our Silver, Gold and Copper plate finishes. Our Pewter, Black and Brass Ox finishes are Nickel free and are in compliance with the EU Nickel directive.
